You know something is deeply wrong with the world when you meet a mother who prays that her babies will die before her. As an HIV-positive widow in Kenya, Pamela’s greatest fear was that she would die and no one would be left to care for her three children, who were also sick. I remember being overwhelmed and utterly broken by Pamela’s story.That was 10 years ago.
Today, HIV-positive mothers not only have the ability to prevent the transmission of HIV to their unborn babies, but they can also live to flourish and care for their children as they grow up.
As Mother’s Day approaches, we are on a mission to help 100 Kenyan mothers gain access to the social and medical interventions needed to prevent the transmission of HIV to their babies. We have found that $1,000 will save an HIV-exposed baby from infection and give a mother the medicine, education and support she needs.
To do that, we’re seeking 100 people who will honor their mother (or a mother they know) with a $1,000 donation that will provide the treatment for one mother and baby in Kenya, in addition to a beautiful Mother’s Day gift box for your honoree. I know this isn’t feasible for many of us, but if you know of someone who would resonate with this campaign and would have the capacity to participate, would you please pass this information along to them?
